'Gotham' cast news: Cameron Monaghan shows Joker grin in new photo of himself

Executive producer Bruno Heller has already confirmed that Joker will not be making an appearance in "Gotham," at least for season two. However, actor Cameron Monaghan had fans thinking otherwise.
Earlier this week, Monaghan posted on Instagram, a Joker-esque photo of himself. Using a police-line-up as a backdrop, the 21-year-old actor posed for the camera with a Joker-like grin. He accompanied the photo with a very-telling but short caption, "#Gotham."
Monaghan guest starred in season one of the Fox superhero drama series as Jerome, a seemingly normal teenage kid pining for the death of his mother, a snake dancer killed at the Haly's Circus. He was later detained by the Gotham City Police but later laughed a sinister laugh and admitted to killing of his own mother. It was a very Joker scene and many immediately assumed that he is going to be the next complex villain.
And he is, indeed. However, the show's executive producer said that season two will not quite have Jerome portraying the Joker Batman fans quite know. He will take on a 'pre-embryonic' Joker that will eventually shape into one of the more popular villains of the "Batman" franchise.
Heller shared in an interview with People in January, "People will have to watch in the long run to see where this character goes and whether he is the Joker or not, but the whole show is about origin stories, and origins can be very complex and convoluted things."
Just Jared reported that Monaghan has already started shooting for season two last July 8. His first shoot saw him throwing what seemed like gas to a school bus filled with students.
"Gotham" narrates the adventures of Detective Inspector James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), who will later become one of Batman's strongest ally. The series also tells the story of the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and his journey to becoming Batman, with the aid of his trusty butler Alfred (Sean Pertwee).
The series also serves as an origin story for popular Batman villains like Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Two-Face.
"Gotham" returns for season two on September 21.
