'Gorilla Glass 5' Corning glass feature: guards screen 4 times, can survive falls from 1.5 meters
Smartphones may now be able to survive a traumatic injury or a disgraced fall: Specialized toughened glass leader Corning has announced its latest version of Gorilla Glass.
The "Gorilla Glass 5" registers an 80 percent chance in protecting smartphones from suffering a cracked glass if they fall from 1.5 meters. Moreover, the New York glass maker has claimed that the new iteration will safeguard the smartphone to four times as likely to survive an accidental fall from waist or shoulder height than its competitors.
In a laboratory test conducted by the company, smartphones were dropped faced down on rough surfaces such as asphalt, from a waist or shoulder height. The test was performed under the assumption that smartphones usually get dropped while putting the phone in a pocket or the more accident-prone selfie or just taking a photo. All in all, the "Gorilla Glass 5" has been reported to remain intact.
Moreover, Corning reiterated that the "Gorilla Glass 5" will still be able to provide the same visual clarity and touch sensitivity its users have come to experience with its previous iterations.
According to the 160-year-old company, the "Gorilla Glass" is produced by placing a glass into a "hot bath of molten salt" which heat exceeds up to 400 degree Celsius. The process is known to cause sodium ions to depart from the glass along with the potassium ions from the salt bath, consequently replacing them. And as such, potassium ions are able to produce a "layer of compressive stress" that is embedded in the glass that resists damage.
Currently, the "Gorilla Glass" products are being used in 4.5 billion devices since 2007. These products include powerhouses like Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG, Hewlett-Packard among others.
