'Geostorm' release date, news: Film undergoes pricey reshoots with a different director

(Reuters/ Gus Ruelas)"Geostorm," which stars Gerard Butler in an environment disaster film, gets an expensive reshoot under a new director.

Minor revisions to a finished movie are normal, however major rehashes that cost a hefty amount are no small matter. This is exactly what's troubling the production and release of "Geostorm."

The big-budgeted environment disaster movie, starring Gerard Butler, will be undergoing major reshoots prior to its release. The said changes might be bad news to Dean Devlin's directorial debut altogether, as someone else is tapped to helm the revisions.

In an exclusive scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, Danny Cannon will be directing the said reshoots with a whopping $15 million budget, which apparently isn't a small price. The fact that a different director is being slated for editing could point to the assumption that Devlin's stint as director may not have been up to par with what Warner Bros. wanted.

Cannon is known for his work with the films "Judge Dredd" and "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer." He is also renowned for helming TV series such as "Gotham," "Nikita," and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

It is rumored that the reshoots happened in Louisiana from Dec. 3 to 14, which brought about huge changes. New characters were even added to the film, which further justifies the enormous budget needed in ironing out the film before it releases by next year.

Despite these, some insiders try to sweep it under the rug by saying they were simply minor edits, terming them as mere "pick-ups." The costs were pointed to visual effects, music, and international staging of the film.

To add to the drastic change, Jerry Bruckheimer is brought in as producer to oversee the reshoots. Some of the titles under his belt include all "CSI" series, "The Amazing Race," and the unreleased films "Bad Boys for Life" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales."

It seems the film has been caught in a storm for quite some time now. It can be recalled that its release date got pushed many times, and is currently slated for Oct. 20, 2017. Hopefully, things get sorted out for the film, and fast.
