Game of Thrones season 4 episode 8 recap: Oberyn sentenced to death

(Source: HBO)

After pausing for a week in commemoration of Memorial Day, Game of Thrones is back on television and the eighth episode of the fourth season packed more happenings that all of the past episodes combined.

"The Mountain and the Viper" gave fans more than they can chew on. Aside from the much-awaited battle of Oberyn Martell and Gregor Clegane, the rest of the seven kingdoms was pretty busy. First, the Wildings attacked Mole's Town, with Ygritte tagging along. Perhaps Ygritte never lost touch of her humanity after sparing Gilly and her son from the face of death.

Grey Worm and Missandei have a little moment down the river when they were taking baths in Meereen, and a sexual tension was born between the two. Missandei shares this information with Danaerys and slightly admits her curiosity towards the leader of the unsullied. With the meeting that happened shortly after, it won't be surprising if a romance between the two will develop in the next episodes.

Speaking of Danaerys, she has decided to ask Jorah to leave her dominance after the faithful hand was caught spying on her during the early stages of their friendship.

Theon Greyjoy was sent by Ramsey to ask the Ironborn to surrender to Bolton. He came out winning them over, and Ramsey gets honored by Bolton and names him his son. In the other side of the kingdom, Petyr Baelish is questioned about the death of Lysa Arryn, and Sansa testifies against him. At first, Sansa spoke of Baelish's lies, but then ultimately tells a detailed story how Lysa became delusional and decided to throw herself into the moon door. This absolves Baelish of all allegations and he starts training Robin Arryn as the new ruler of Vale.

As for the battle, those who have read the book are well aware of how it turned out. For the clueless viewers, Oberyn suffered a surprising death after trying to pursue the confession of a wounded Clegane. Just when Martell thought he was winning, Clegane hits his leg and bashes his head until his brains splattered on the floor.

After the battle, Tywin Lannister declares Tyrion Lannister guilty of killing King Joffrey and sentences him to death.
