Floyd Mayweather vs. Andre Berto: Boxing enthusiasts not happy; call clash an embarrassment
When Floyd Mayweather Jr. mentioned last month that he was considering Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield for his final fight, people thought he was joking. When it was more or less confirmed that the undisputed boxer would be getting in the ring with Berto for his final fight, people again thought he was joking.
They are also thinking that his next fight is a big cop-out.
The news is so unbelievable that boxing enthusiasts cannot even begin to wrap their heads around it. To be fair, Berto was a title-holder but his past six fights were not impressive enough to even register in the national consciousness. The 31-year-old's three wins and three losses certainly do not warrant a match with the acknowledged pound-for-pound king Mayweather.
And Mayweather even thinking about getting in the ring with Berto, instead of a worthier opponent like Amir Khan, has only made the public think that he is not confident enough to lay his record on the line, choosing instead to fight a match he will easily win.
The news that Mayweather is fighting Berto has resulted in a lot of backlash against the fighter. Other boxers have also weighed in and expressed their disbelief and disgust.
Shane Mosley, who used to hold the welterweight title, was so disgusted that he did not want to talk about it and wondered if "it's going to be worse than the Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather fight."
Another boxer, Victor Ortiz, says the reported fight is "embarrassing" and suggested that both Mayweather and Berto should just retire.
Erik Morales, who was a four-division-title holder himself, summed up what a lot of people were thinking when he described it as a fight that "almost nobody wants to see."
"He does not want to take a risk, he has never wanted to take a risk, and he doesn't want to take a risk now," he added.
However, there are some people, like ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, who have theorized that the 38-year-old Mayweather is just thinking of using his match with Berto as a tune-up for a rematch with either Manny Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto.
