'Elementary' season 5: Fiona remains an important lady in Sherlock's life
Fiona (Betty Gilpin) will continue to play a major role in Sherlock's (Jonny Lee Miller) life in the next season of the CBS series "Elementary."
Executive producer Rob Doherty told Entertainment Weekly that Gilpin's character was someone they want to see again in the show. Fiona's relationship with Sherlock last installment was refreshing to see after watching the consultant focus on solving cases week by week. Fans got to witness him in a different light, a normal person who feels love and desire just like any man. Sherlock loosened up after meeting Fiona and she was instrumental in the revelation about his mother. Although they ended their affair, she would always be just beyond the shadows for Sherlock.
"That is a story that has yet to resolve itself. That's assuming there is a resolution or a punctuation mark coming. I don't know that there is. Dating Fiona was a big step for him this season. As he expressed to her, he's never had a "girlfriend" outside of Moriarty. Knowing what he knows now, it's hard to look back and call her a girlfriend. As we get into next season, Fiona is someone that we would like to see again. We'll see what the state is for that relationship after a few months have passed," the showrunner said.
Meanwhile, viewers will miss Sherlock's dynamics with his father, Morland (John Noble), in season 5. According to TV Line, the veteran actor would not be joining the series as a regular in the next installment. Morland bid goodbye after choosing to take over the Moriarty organization. In a selfless move to save his son and Joan (Lucy Liu), the older Holmes made the decision to sacrifice his remaining years for the cabal. According to Doherty, Morland was a lot of help in shaping up season 4's storyline. His presence also paved the way for the unveiling of Sherlock's backstory.
"Elementary" season 5 still has no release date.
