Denver Broncos roster news 2016: QB Trevor Siemian impressive enough to nab starting job
A lot of people expected veteran Mark Sanchez to start at quarterback for the Denver Broncos. But as the 2016 National Football League (NFL) season nears, another candidate emerged for the role and got it. His name is Trevor Siemian.
When the Broncos traded for Sanchez early in the off-season, many thought that he had already sealed the starting duties since his competition for the job were Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch.
But as the preseason continued, Siemian put up great performances which rivalled Sanchez's case to be a starter, especially in the Broncos' third preseason outing last Saturday versus the Los Angeles Rams which they won 17-9.
The game was the second consecutive time Siemian started for Denver and he delivered. Against the Rams, the 24-year-old completed 10-of-17 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown, also throwing one interception.
Following the exhibition match Saturday, Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said he could now make a decision on who will be the Broncos' new starting quarterback.
"I've got a lot invested and a lot of work that I can make some decisions off of now," Kubiak said according to ESPN. He added: "I'll do that. Does that mean I'm going to do it [Sunday] or Monday? I don't know. I've got enough going on that I can make a decision."
In the report, Siemian said he is "feeling confident" when asked if he thinks he will be the reigning Super Bowl champions' new starting passer.
The news was confirmed Monday morning as Kubiak announced that Siemian is now the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback.
This off-season, the Broncos lost two quarterbacks who played for them in last season's championship run.
The legendary Peyton Manning decided to hang the cleats for good last March, ending his career with two titles in 18 seasons. Meanwhile his backup, Brock Osweiler, left Denver and signed with the Houston Texans where he will have the starting role.
