'Chicago PD' season 3 spoilers: Burgess under fire for teen shooting in episode 21; Can 'Chicago Justice' team save her?

"Chicago PD" defends one of its own in an all-new episode titled "Justice" airing this Wednesday night. The upcoming episode also serves as the backdoor pilot for new series "Chicago Justice."
While Burgess and Roman are out patrolling in their police car, an unidentified man in a hoodie shoots at them five times and injures Roman in the process. Burgess immediately runs after the assailant. After briefly losing sight of the assailant at a corner, she locates the assailant and shoots him. Unfortunately, no weapon is found at the crime scene, leading many to believe that Burgess had made a mistake. Furthermore, the suspected shooter, Michael Ellis — a 17-year-old African American honor student — claims that Burgess shot the wrong guy.
Given the recent high-profile racial shootings and Michael's permanent paralysis, the residents of Chicago are enraged and fiercely protesting against police officers shooting unarmed African American teenagers.
Assistant State Attorney Peter Stone has been assigned to defend Burgess. While his help is much needed by the team, his arrival is complicated by the fact that he is the same man that sent Voight to prison. Despite the tension between the two, they are able to work together under a common goal — to save Burgess.
Stone will have a difficult time defending Burgess given that there were no weapons, no continuous line of sight, and no witnesses during the shooting. Proving Michael's guilt also proves to be a difficult task. He has no priors, no gang associations, and no gun residue.
Stone and his team first decide to use Officer Burgess' awards, skills, and dedication as a police officer to prove her innocence. However, the defense attorney comes down hard on Burgess and reveals her romantic relationship with Roman.
Stone, along with State Attorney Mark Jefferies and his team, will have to uncover the motive for Michael's attack on the police officers. Jefferies asks him to tread lightly as a wrong conviction will not bode well with the people.
To see Burgess' fate, be sure to catch "Justice" airing on May 11.
Season 3 of "Chicago PD" airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. on NBC.
