'Chicago P.D.' season 3 spoilers: can Lindsay break her downward spiral? Actress Sophia Bush wants viewers to witness her grief

"Chicago P.D." had some optimistic moments in its finale with Burgess and Ruzek getting engaged and Atwater getting promoted to intelligence. But the most shocking part of the finale was what Detective Lindsay did. She quit.

Ever since Nadia's death in season two, Lindsay has been continuing to fall into an abyss of drugs, alcohol and men. Nadia's death has clearly hit the detective the hardest, since she was like a little sister to her. Lindsay even went back to her corrupt mother. The cycle of destruction continued to lead to a shocking finale where she handed over her badge to a noticeably awestruck Voight.

It is obvious that season three's premiere episode will deal with Lindsay's grief and downward spiral. However, at this stage, it is unclear how much time the former detective will take to get back on her feet. Actress Sophia Bush, who essays the role of the tough detective, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her character. When asked where the season would pick up after she handed in her badge, the actress mused, "We're a little bit unsure as to what the time jump will be. Last season it had to be about six weeks. Now the writers are talking about, will it be six days? Or six weeks again? What will it look like? At this point, nothing is set in stone."

The actress explained that she would like her grief and downward spiral to be explored further in a couple of episodes, instead of simply having it wrapped up in one episode. Bush said it was important for viewers to watch her character deal with the grief to develop further.

Meanwhile, Fashion & Style has speculated about whether Ruzek and Bugress would work together, now that the two are engaged following a low-key marriage proposal. Fans will also have to wait and see if the wedding bells toll for the romantic pair in season three.

"Chicago P.D." premieres its third season this fall on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
