'Cars 3' release date, news: Extended sneak peek shows McQueen is not ready to retire

(Facebook/ Disney Pixar)"Cars 3" to see Lightning McQueen stronger and faster

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, or, in this case, probably faster or smarter. This appears to be the dogma of the third installment to the Cars franchise, "Cars 3."

In the extended sneak peek, it starts with the gritty and gloomy scene of Lightning McQueen stumbling across the race track. This has gotten fans speculating if he's going to quit racing, but he is decided to return and redeem himself from being beaten by newcomer, Jackson Storm. In order to do this, he is going to need all the help he can get, most notably from the new character, Cruz Ramirez.

Immediately after the teaser aired, it was greeted with mixed reactions. Some were excited to see the red racer back in action and in cinemas soon, while there are those who sarcastically jest and ask if this will be the franchise's shot at redemption.

In a way, this is a rather expected reaction. It can be recalled that the first movie did well in the box office, while the second film did a mediocre job, considering it had more than twice the production budget, as per The Numbers. All that's left for Disney Pixar is to make sure the third film could outperform the previous installments and do better.

The new trailer for "Cars 3" was aired on ESPN, Jan. 9, 2017 during the College Football playoff national championship as was teased days before the said event. From the looks of it, it indeed created a buzz, and hopefully a good one at that.

Owen Wilson returns as the voice behind Lightning McQueen. He is joined by Larry the Cable Guy (Mater), Cristela Alonzo (Cruz Ramirez), Bonnie Hunt (Sally Carrera), Tony Shalhoub (Luigi), Katherine Helmond (Lizzie), Cheech Martin (Ramone), and Armie Hammer (Jackson Storm).

"Cars 3" races into theaters on June 16.
