Blocks modular smartwatch to start Kickstarter campaign on Oct. 13

The smartwatch space has become increasingly cramped this year but in spite of this, a new entrant is going to be arriving soon in the form of Blocks. The name of the smartwatch is inspired by the fact that it is a modular offering comprised of several sections that can be swapped out and replaced. Now the company behind the modular smartwatch has stated that a Kickstarter campaign will begin next week.

Wearable states that the company BLOCKS Wearables Ltd. first mentioned the project last year but since then, there has been no information about when the smartwatch will become available to customers. Now, the company has announced that the Kickstarter campaign will start at 9 a.m. PT on Oct. 13 and there will be early bird discounts on offer for backers on the crowd funding website.

Kickstarter has become a popular venue even for smartwatch companies, the most successful being Pebble. Pebble also used the website when it wanted to raise funds for Pebble Time, which it released this year.

However, this does not mean that the Blocks modular smartwatch will also experience the same level of success. For now, BLOCKS Wearables seems to be on track and has even partnered with Qualcomm. This partnership, according to GSM Arena, will see the Snapdragon 400 chipset being used on the smartwatch, which will at least make its hardware similar to what is present on other top-of-the-line smartwatches.

The customization options to be made available to users will make Blocks unique as sections of the band can be swapped out and replaced. This will allow users to add GPS or another sensor, like a heart rate monitor. However, this is just the beginning as BLOCKS Wearables also plans to allow users to snap on sections that support additional batteries as well as cellular connectivity. The company also explained that this type of modular technology is more sustainable and ultimately better for the environment.
