Captain Flint, Long John Silver, and the rest of their crew will be sailing off into the sunset when the fourth season of "Black Sails" comes to an end.

Starz recently announced that season 4 of the critically acclaimed series will run for only 10 episodes, and it will, unfortunately, also be its last.

According to reports, "Black Sails" season 4 will find the pirates engaged in an all-out war in the West Indies. "The shores of New Providence Island have never been bloodier, but the closer civilization comes to defeat, the more desperately, and destructively, it will fight back."

"Black Sails" co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg revealed in a statement that it was "a rare privilege in television" to be given all the creative leeway and support they had for the past seasons and thanked the network for it.

"While it was a difficult decision for us to make this season our last, we simply couldn't imagine anything beyond it that would make for a better ending to the story nor a more natural handoff to Treasure Island," Steinberg added.

"Black Sails" is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's beloved "Treasure Island," taking place two decades before it and revolving around Captain Flint (Toby Stephens).

The news is quite a letdown for fans of the popular show, especially since it has consistently garnered high ratings. "Black Sails" has averaged 3.6 million viewers for the past three seasons and is shown in about 200 countries around the world. The series has also won Emmy's for sound editing and visual effects.

However, fans also know that ending the show in season 4 is also a good move. For one, it means the show will end on a high note and not linger for longer than was necessary. And since fans know the end is coming, they won't have to deal with the shock and anger over an unexpected ending, unlike what "Penny Dreadful" fans recently experienced.

"Black Sails" season 4 will return to Starz sometime in 2017.
