'Attack on Titan: Junior High' episode 2 review: Latest episode not as funny as first one; Levi is the comedic highlight

As parody goes, "Attack on Titan: Junior High" is one of the best - as proven by its undeniably hilarious pilot last Oct. 4. Was it able to sustain the momentum, though, with the second episode? Not so much.

The first episode of "Attack on Titan: Junior High" started strong, making good use of parallelisms with Hajime Isayama's original "Attack on Titan." While it still uses the same strategy with episode two, IGN notes that it struggled a bit with which tone to use; thereby losing some of its comic effect.

The overall plot of episode two, which is titled "Chasing! Titan Junior High School," revolves around a classic high school anime plot: a student refuses to join any club and has to be forced into doing it. In this particular episode, the student is Armin and Eren and Mikasa take it upon themselves to have him sign-up for a school club.

At the start of the episode, Eren already establishes Armin's dislike of the cold and refusal to go out for school during winter. But he and Mikasa tries to force him out of the house when teacher Keith says anyone who does not choose a club to join will be forced into one of the teacher's choosing. Their attempt is thwarter when a Titan steals the food that was to be used to lure Armin out. Thanks to a mysterious upperclassman, later revealed as Levi, they were saved from grave danger.

Speaking of Levi, he is the centric comedy in the new episode. His parody is also a classic - a Junior High totally obsessed with making everything spick and span - but it works. Especially in that one scene where he opens windows ala Disney Princess.

All in all, the episode does aim to be funny. It just did not work as much as the first, which started off really well by putting all the characters in a silly setting that's not typical of a school anime. Instead of looking and feeling like a parody, "Chasing! Titan Junior High School" felt a bit like "Attack on Titan" with chibi characters, notes IGN. It's not an entire reason to let go of the series, though. There were still some very good ups in it that might make its way into the third episode, along with what made the first one really great.

"Attack on Titan: Junior High" airs in Japan every Sunday night.
