Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals free agency rumors 2016: Mohamed Sanu parts ways with Bengals, now a Falcon with five-year pact
The Atlanta Falcons boosted their offense after agreeing to a five-year deal with wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals in his first four seasons in the National Football League (NFL).
According to ESPN, Sanu's deal will earn him $32.5 million including a guaranteed $14 million in the first two seasons. The new contract also has a $7 million signing bonus, with the 26-year-old having a chance to get an extra $1.25 million in incentives based on his reception tally in the final three years of the deal.
Sanu was selected 83rd overall by the Bengals in the 2012 NFL Draft and was an efficient contributor during his stint with the team.
The former Rutgers Scarlet Knight was limited to only nine games during his rookie season because of an injury. Since then, he became a regular for Cincinnati and started in the majority of games played in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Sanu had the best year of his young professional career in the 2014 season when the Bengals' main receivers went down because of injuries.
In the Bengals' previous campaign, Sanu played in all 16 games for the third consecutive season, but only saw four starts.
Sanu had 33 receptions for 394 yards in the 2015 season, but for the first time in his career failed to score a touchdown.
The Falcons are hoping the recent addition of Sanu this off season can help them end a three-season playoff drought.
Atlanta finished second in the National Football Conference (NFC) South last season with an 8–8 record, not enough for a postseason appearance.
Meanwhile, Sanu's former team, the Bengals, made it to the playoffs in the past five seasons. However, in each of those seasons, they failed to escape the Wild Card Playoffs. Last season, Cincinnati ended on top of the American Football Conference (AFC) North but was eliminated by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
