Atlanta Braves injury, roster news 2016: Relief pitcher Dan Winkler injures throwing elbow in loss to Cardinals

The 2016 Major League Basebal (MLB) regular season is shaping up to be a challenging one for the Atlanta Braves, who, before losing their sixth consecutive game Monday had one pitcher down in Dan Winkler.

Last Sunday, in a 12-7 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals, Winkler was facing Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk in the seventh inning when he threw the pitch that led to a broken right elbow. Quickly after the throw, the 26-year-old clutched his elbow and left the mound, walked a bit, then kneeled before receiving assistance. It was clear he was in pain and according to the Associated Press, he was thinking while heading to the dugout, "Not now, not again."

In the 2015 season, Winkler was limited to only two relief appearances because he spent the majority of the year recovering from a Tommy John surgery. This season was expected to be a comeback for him, but unfortunately, it seems like he is again facing the horrible situation he was in during the previous campaign.

Seeing action in three games this season, Winkler has four strikeouts in a total of 2.1 innings pitched.

The Associated Press reported that because of the injury to Winkler, Atlanta made moves regarding its pitchers. John Gant was demoted to the minors, while Chris Withrow was recalled.

Winkler's injury is just one of the Braves' problems this season, which is yet to turn in their favor.

After finishing fourth in the National League (NL) East in the 2015 season, which marked the second consecutive year they did not reach the playoffs, the Braves are the only club in the MLB this season that are yet to win a game. Currently, they are 0-6 after losing their home series against the Washington Nationals (0-2) and the Cardinals (0-3), also dropping the first game of their road series facing the Nats again.

The Braves' series with the Nationals will continue today upto Thursday.
