'Vikings' season 4 air date, spoilers: Ragnar Lothbrok to complete his purpose when the series returns from its midseason hiatus

(Facebook/Vikings)Ragnar Lothbrok will bring his purpose to completion when Vikings returns for the second half of its season 4 this July.

Despite the heartbreaking events in his life before the series went into a midseason hiatus, Ragnar Lothbrok's (Travis Fimmel) story in History Channel's "Vikings" is definitely far from over. When the series returns for the second half of its fourth season, viewers will witness the return of Ragnar as he quests to complete his purpose.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "Vikings" producer Michael Hirst had earlier insinuated that season 4 would feature the ultimate clash between Ragnar and his erstwhile brother Rollo (Clive Standen). True enough, the anticipated face-off of the brothers left many viewers breathless as the two characters tried to prove their supremacy and outdo each other using their weapons. The penultimate clash of the two, however, ended with Rollo emerging as the victor.

In the same Entertainment Weekly article, Hirst said that those who think that Ragnar Lothbrok's story is over are wrong as there is still so much about the character that remains untold. In fact, he said that Ragnar has returned for a purpose, and he has to achieve that purpose as it is part of the story.

"One of the great shots is that visual effect when Ragnar comes back into Kattegat, and Kattegat has changed. It's a huge town. He's a stranger in this place, now. The sons have seen all this change, lived through that," said Hirst.

In Ragnar Lothbrok's absence, though, the throne of Kattegat was left empty. In order to fill this void, his second wife, Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), took it upon herself to assume the throne and make herself the queen.

However, with Hirst revealing that Ragnar's first wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), is still alive despite her predicament during the midseason finale, it is now widely believed that she will be back to challenge Aslaug as the rightful heiress to the Kattegat throne.

"There's something she does which is so unexpected, but when you think about it later, you think: 'No, she had to do that. That is Lagertha.'" said Hirst.

"Vikings" is expected to return to the History Channel in July.
