NPD Group recently released a market research report regarding sales for game consoles available in the U.S. According to the report, Sony has sold 7 million PS4 units worldwide since launch, while Microsoft's Xbox One has sold less with 5 million units.

Despite the release of much-hyped Microsoft exclusive Titanfall, the Xbox One has so far failed to get past PS4 sales in the U.S. The good news for Microsoft, however, is that Titanfall topped the March game charts.

The global gaming community responded overwhelmingly to the PS4, said Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group Chief Executive Andrew House.

Although the company still faces difficulties keeping up with continuously strong demand worldwide, Sony remains steadfast in its commitment to meet the needs of its customers. PS4 sales already exceeds PS3 sales, which sold only 3.5 million units in the first four months of its release.

The NPD Group's March 2014 results includes the Xbox One's selling performance, which had a strong result in March with 311,000 units sold in the U.S., surpassing Xbox 360 sales with over 60 percent in the same period. Xbox One is also showing impressive sales on software, averaging 2.9 games per console.

Meanwhile, Xbox 360 sales also continued to grow with 111,000 unit sales in March in the United States, more than any other seventh generation console.

When Xbox One and Xbox 360 sales are combined, the two sell the most games across console platforms, with 4.1 million sales total in games – 1.4 million for Xbox One in March and 2.7 million for Xbox 360, totalling 49 percent of the software market.

In March, topping the software list of the Xbox One was: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Titanfall. For the Xbox 360 the list was topped by: Minecraft, Dark Souls II, Lego Movie Video Game, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, Call of Duty: Ghosts and South Park: The Stick of Truth.
