Pinterest Guided Search improves in-site search

Popular photo-sharing and social networking website Pinterest said it will provide "Guided Search", which is an improved version of search that gives users more tools for customization and content discovery. Guided Search is available for Apple iOS and Android-based devices such as Samsung, HTC and LG smartphones.

Guided search is designed to better manage the massive deluge of content hosted on Pinterest, which now has more than 750 million boards and more than three billion pins. Pinterest "Boards" are pages of content created by its users. "Pins" are the things users post on the Boards such as home, arts and crafts, style/fashion and food, among many others.

Pinterest said guided search is designed to let users better find exactly what they're looking for, and lets users tweak their queries. It then adjusts the results it displays rather than reveal a static list of results.

Pinterest is basically a personalized media platform where users' content and the content of others can be browsed on the main page.

"The right answer for you might not be the right answer for everyone else," said CEO Ben Silbermann who announced the advent of guided search.

With guided search, Pinterest is trying to find its own answer to a challenge faced by other social sites: how best to reveal content most relevant to users.

Guided search on Pinterest will be coming to the desktop at a date to be announced later on.

Pinterest was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp. It is managed by Cold Brew Labs and funded by a small group of entrepreneurs and investors.
