OnePlus One smartphone: Smash challenge criticized, company asks participants to donate instead

Oppo Electronics subsidiary OnePlus has just released its new smartphone "One", which looks like a promising device. However, the Hong Kong-based Chinese OEM seems to have a non-impressive marketing campaign which has been called by some as "more than questionable."

Many did not like its recent "smash challenge", a campaign for the new smartphone One, starting on April 25, which dared high-end smartphone owners to "smash" their devices for the brand new One. One Plus will select the first 100 winners.

The "high-end" smartphones eligible for smashing include iPhone 5/5s/5c, Black Berry Z10/Z30, HTC One M7/M8 and One Max, LG G Flex/G2/G Pro2/Nexus 5, Motorola Moto X, Nokia Lumia 1020/1520/920/925, Samsung Galaxy Note 2/3, Samsung Galaxy S3/S4/S5, Sony Xperia Z/Z1/Z2 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

The promo is only for those from the following countries: United States, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong SAR China, Germany, France, Finland, Denmark, Canada, Belgium and Austria.

Many blatantly opposed the "smash" idea. Android Central for instance, suggested to donate the high-end smartphones, instead of smashing them. It was a terrible idea to smash an expensive good-conditioned smartphone, which may cost more than One itself. Besides, destroying a good phone is harmful to the environment.

It looks like OnePlus has realized its awful marketing campaign when it gives the selected "smash" participants, since Friday, May 2, the option to donate their smartphones, instead of smashing them. Donations will go to Medic Mobile.

The newly-announced OnePlus One comes in a 5.5-inch LTPS IPS 1080p display, 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, 3GB RAM, 3100mAh batter, 5MP front facing camera and 13 MP rear-facing camera. OnePlus' first smartphone is run by Android 4.4 KitKat CyanogenMod 11S.
