NVIDIA Shield Portable: A would-be Nintendo Switch competitor never to see the light of day

(Facebook/ NVIDIA Shield)The NVIDIA Shield series could have had an NVIDIA Shield Portable, but it looks like it won't be coming anymore.

Ever since the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 was held live for the whole world to witness the dawn of the revolutionary gaming hybrid, the hype has been skyrocketing. NVIDIA must have hoped to compete against it with the Shield Portable; however, it looks like the competition has already been won before it even began.

On a reddit post in the NVIDIA Shield subreddit, photos of the rumored device have surfaced, which was originally expected to rival that of the Nintendo Switch. It is unique in the sense that it streams some PC games onto the portable device, but other than that, the ability to carry the device anywhere may have been its expected call to fame.

The NVIDIA Shield Portable's design has a look of an Xbox controller with a small screen attached to it. Like other consoles, it has all the directional keypads and buttons that one can expect from other controllers out in the market.

What's curious to see, though, is it was filed on July 15, 2016, and it has been a very long time since an update has been made to its progress. No news has been gathered if development is still a no or a go. More details can be seen in the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website here.

According to The Verge, that long time of inactivity after the product was submitted to the FCC reeks of cancellation. If so, the Nintendo Switch won't have a competitor that dons the same capabilities and portability.

The NVIDIA Shield Portable and the Nintendo Switch have one big similarity, and that is the presence of a Tegra processor. If the NVIDIA counterpart were to come to fruition, then it would all be a battle of game lists and efficiency, which are elements that the two have varying contents.

Given the information on hand, it looks like the Nintendo has won so far without lifting a finger.
