TV Line describes the role of Diggs as "Marine Gunnery Sergeant Aaron Davis, a Special Ops sniper who suffered traumatic injuries and PTSS after an ambush attack in Iraq. For the past six months, Davis has been at Walter Reed Medical Center, facing a slow but effective rehab that includes a cutting-edge music therapy program."

"Once a free spirit and a gifted musician, Davis has spiraled into a shell of his former self When Gibbs (Mark Harmon) attempts to reach the wounded warrior, needing as he does an account of the aforementioned ambush to solve a murder."

Diggs entered Broadway as a cast member of the musical "Carousel," but he is best remembered for his role in "Rent," where he portrayed a nasty landlord. He has since starred in a number of other plays including the revival of "Chicago" where he was casted as Billy Flynn.

He joined television via the soap opera "Guiding Light," his first commercial venture off stage. His debut into film was through the movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back."

Last year, Diggs was visible again on Broadway when he was casted as the lead, Hedwig, in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." The show ran from July 22 until Sep. 13. He also wrote "Mixed Me" and "Chocolate Me," both books for children in the same year.

As to why Diggs was chosen for the show's milestone, HNGN shares that "NCIS" showrunner Gary Glasberg explained they wanted an actor who could play a wounded warrior and at the same time do a touching musical performance. Glasberg also believes that "The emotionally charged role is tailor-made for Taye Diggs and we are so thrilled and honored to have him join us."

The episode will air on March 15.
