Consumers are expecting many new features to be added to Apple's iPhone 8 when it is released this year in time for the iPhone's anniversary celebration. Commonly, consumers would talk about an all-glass OLED display, a bigger size, and a steel chassis, but not many expected for the new smartphone to feature an IP68 water and dust-resistant ratings.

IP stands for International Protection marking that is a standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The first digit that follows the IP mark indicates its general resistance against dust to include dirt and sand. Additionally, the second digit is an indication of the device's water resistance. If a smartphone gets a 7 water-resistant rating, for instance, it means that the device can get protection of at least 30 minutes. The rating, however, does not promote ingress of water of harmful quantities, according to an article by Trusted Reviews.

Samsung's Galaxy S7, in comparison, has a rating of 8 for water resistance, enabling the phone to be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for at least 30 minutes. It is highly likely that the company's Galaxy S8 will still include the same feature or one that is a bit higher than the S7.

According to multiple sources, the upgraded IP68 will allow the iPhone 8 to be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes without fear of getting damaged. It is considered a considerable upgrade from the IP67 rating on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Meanwhile, reports are hinting that Apple will release three new phones this year to include a device code-named Ferrari, which is considered to be the anniversary iPhone. It is also believed that that SIM tray will be transferred at the bottom of the device. Moreover, Apple is likely to introduce long-range wireless charging of up to 15 meters with the iPhone 8.

As for the iPhone 8's potential release date, it is expected to be launched in September this year as traditionally followed by Apple. Since 2017 is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, it is safe to assume that Apple will be mounting a big event that will also include big surprises.
