'Injustice: Gods Among Us 2' release date rumors: Sequel announcement at E3 2016; launch pegged for March 2017

(Facebook/injusticegame)The sequel to "Injustice: Gods Among Us" could be announced at the E3 2016 next month.

"Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" is reportedly in development and is on track for a 2017 release date. The sequel to the DC-themed fighting video game could be officially announced in the coming weeks.

According to Gameblog.fr, a source has revealed that "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" will be announced either during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) or the days leading up to it. The E3 2016 trade show is set to take place from June 14 to 16. Following the announcement, the game will reportedly be released in March 2017.

The aforementioned source also revealed that the upcoming sequel will use the same engine as "Mortal Kombat X."

While game developer NetherRealm Studios has not responded to these latest rumors, a 2017 release date for "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" appears to be plausible. A quick look into NetherRealm's past releases indicates that the developer typically releases a new game every two years. Its last release was "Mortal Kombat X" in 2015. The developer's two main franchises, "Mortal Kombat" and "Injustice: Gods Among Us," also seem to have an alternate release schedule.

According to the latest reports, the sequel to "Injustice: Gods Among Us" will only be available for the current generation of gaming consoles — the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One — and the Microsoft Windows PC. This is consistent with the compatible devices for "Mortal Kombat X." With the revelation that they will use the same engine, it seems that the game's technologies may only be supported by the newer consoles.

Although unconfirmed, news of "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" has been positively received by fans of the original game. Many players are excited to learn about what the sequel has in store for them and which DC characters would be included in the roster.
