'House of Cards' season 5 news: Is the upcoming season the last?

(Facebook / House of Cards)All seasons of "House of Cards" are now available on Netflix.

With the announcement of one season renewal for "House of Cards," while other Netflix shows have been renewed for at least two, many are concluding that season 5 would be the show's last.

Avid fans of the show remain hopeful though that the reason behind the one season only renewal at the moment is due to the major change the show is going through. Series creator Beau Willimon has made known in January that after the current season, he will be working on other projects, as reported by Yibada.

Executive producer Kevin Spacey, who also plays lead actor in "House of Cards," announced the following month that co-showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese will take over in season 5. Lead actress Robin Wright was announced to direct some of the episodes as well.

Gibson and Pugliese have worked as senior writers for the show since 2014. Speaking on their takeover, Spacey said, "I welcome Frank and Melissa in their new roles on 'House of Cards' and look forward to collaborating with them and our creative team on season 5," quoted by Enstarz.

Season 5 has been announced even before season 4 was aired on March 5. No premiere has been officially announced, but based on previous dates that came a year apart, fans expect to binge watch again same month next year. Season 3 premiered on Feb. 27, 2015 and one year and one week after, the current season was shown.

Season 4 ended with intensifying feud between husband and wife Frank and Claire Underwood. Both politically ambitious, the cliff-hanger saw them running side-by-side as president and vice president with individual selfish motives. Fans expect Claire to do better in the elections than Frank who rumors suggest could die of liver damage when the upcoming season ends.

Actress Neve Campbell who debuted on season 4 as Leann Harvey will still be in season 5, which some think will get killed by actor Michael Kelly's character, Doug Stamper.
