'Call of Duty: World War 2' rumors: Leaked images tease the franchise's return to its roots

(Facebook/CallofDuty)Upcoming "Call of Duty" game to feature the game's "traditional combat"

The popular "Call of Duty" might go back to its roots, if the rumors turn out to be true.

A series of leaked images reportedly made its way to YouTuber named TheFamilyVideoGamers through an unnamed source who is reportedly a person who has knowledge about the project at Sledgehammer. The images then made their way online through a video, including the one that shows a World War 2 setting with the title "Call of Duty: WWII."

The video also reveals four steelbook concepts that show some scenes that appear to be taken on a beach landing. All the featured steelbooks come with the title "Call of Duty: WWII" written on the spines.

According to the video, the images are meant as the video game franchise's marketing concepts that could also work as a placeholder title.

While there are no confirmed announcements from game publisher Activision, some fans turned to Reddit to express their opinions about the leak. Some believe that the image is taken from the film "Saving Private Ryan," but they still have to provide some proof about their claims.

However, a statement from Activision COO Thomas Tippl revealed during the company's earnings call back in February that the planned "Call of Duty" game that they will release for this year will feature the game's "traditional combat." He also revealed that the next "Call of Duty" installment will go "back to its roots."

This is not the first time that a detail about an upcoming installment of "Call of Duty" has been leaked. Polygon notes that around this time in 2016, details about "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" and "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered" leaked online before they were officially revealed. Details about the "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" were also teased by game studio Treyarch and Activision a month before its official launch.

The confirmation about the rumored "Call of Duty: World War 2" is expected in the coming days.
