iWatch may not be the name of Apple's wearable device due to confusion with 'iSwatch'

Swiss watchmaker Swatch does not want Apple to use the rumored name "iWatch" to any of its upcoming wearable devices. Swatch uses "iSwatch" in its own line of watches, and "iWatch" is very close that it may cause confusion to the consumers. Swatch has been blocking some companies in the past who wished to register "iWatch" and this has been confirmed by filings in the U.S. government.

Whether Apple will be using the "iWatch" label for its rumored upcoming wearable is not confirmed. Historically though, such is more likely, considering the Cupertino electronics titan has been using "i" before its products – iPhone, iMac, iPod, iPad and even iOS, iTunes and iCloud. However, Cupertino has also trademarked "iWatch" in some countries already, such as in Japan, Turkey and Mexico.

CEO Nick Hayek of Swatch said its measures to block Apple to use "iWatch" may include all the countries where it has trademarked the term. Such is just normal for a company to react and protect its brand name, he added.

So far, there is no reaction coming from the Cupertino-based Apple Inc. with regard to this, as its spokeswoman Kristin Huguet declined to comment.

Apple has not even confirmed its plans to participate in the wearables market, more so, with an internet-connected wristwatch. However, many are anticipating, especially when rumors have it that the Apple wristwatch will highlight "health and fitness." CEO Hayek said, if Apple pushes through with its modern wristwatch, it will be better for the iPhone maker to find other ways on what to name it.

Hayek likewise mentioned Swatch and Apple had been in occasional talks about future technologies, and not about the "iWatch" issue yet.
